what's up everybody? i'm new to the forum but been on it for a while. anyway i've been driving myself crazy on looking for a new mic and preamp mainly for vocals. i heard good things about the summit audio 2ba-221 and like the price. i also was looking at the universal audio la-610. which is double the price and a channel strip. which may be important. also i was looking at Neumannn tlm-103, AKGc414, rhode k2, and have heard great things about the mojave audio ma-200. i have Digi 003 and a macbook pro. i work exclusively with one artist and we are getting a lot of press with the last project we put out even though I'm not that happy with the overall sound quality, I'm looking for a professional sound and dont know if i could cheap out or i should spend the money.

The odds of you picking the perfect preamp/mic combo for your vocalist by random questions on the internet are really low. If you give more information about the style of music and vocal qualities of the singer you will get better guesses, but that's all they will be. To do this "right" you need to find a place where you can do shootouts with a bunch of combinations and see what sounds best.
However, I am "centrally located" hundreds of miles from anywhere, so I've often had to take my chances on internet shopping. I find I minimize my buyer's remorse by buying good quality, "classic" pieces. On your list, items like the UA LA-610 and the AKG414 stand out. Been around forever. Used for all kinds of things. If you can experiment with other competitors you will almost certainly find a better combo to fit this particular singer. But no one ever said, "what a jerk I am, I bought a 414!!"
Again, the best way is to try before you buy. If not, buy long time well known quality.

yeah thats true. i do hip hop. i produce and dj. my artist is named Dashah. he has a mid range to low end voice. im looking for something thats smooth warm and alot of clarity without being grity muffled and harsh. i just stepped it up from 001 with only stock plugins on a pc to 003 factory bundle on a mac book pro. also i have a grovetube 55 and the cheapest pre amp out. i have guitar center close buy but they don't rent. with the plugins i have now i can get the vocals to sound alot better but then they sound to processed. what i dont like about the old recordings is that the vocals were flat and harsh.
