Hello hello. Just registered here to finally get guidance on something Ive always wanted to do.
What good equipment or programs are out there under $700.00 that can produce good strings, symphony, orchestra sounds?
I mainly play guitar (8 years), but Ive always loved the ambient symphonic (real word?) stuff.
Influences include:
Cliff Martinez (Solaris)
Mark Isham (Crash)
Gabriel Yared (City of Angels, Possession, Cold Mountain)
Yoko Kanno
this kind of style.

For orchestral libraries your choices under $700 (really under $300-$400) are EWQLSO Silver (not sure what it will be with the new PLAY system); MOTU's Symphonic Instrument; Kirk Hunter Emerald; Garritan Personal Orchestra; and possibly (not sure how extensive the orchestral samples, are), Sonivox Muse.
Each are basic orchestral libraries - you get a variety of instruments, but limited articulations and layers.

Mark Isham uses and is very fond of the E-MU Emulator X software engine. I concur. Great sounding, powerful and the various E-MU filters are unique and unmatched. The ability to use Emulator X as a VSTi or stand alone as a external MIDI module is a big plus. E-MU's Modern Symphonic Orchestra sound/sample set is very elaborate and optimized for Emulator X. I use both and think it sounds great even though you need a decent DAW PC to get the most out of it.
