Well, obviously, Kurt is going to have a better, more complete answer, but I'll take a quick crack at it:

Shure:
SM57 (2) Guitars, vocals, drums (Every studio needs at least 2 SM57s) - US$160

AKG:
D112 (1) Drums/bass - US$180

SE Electronics:
SE1 (2) Drum OHs, acoutic guitars - US$350

Rode:
NT1a (1) Vocals - US$200

total: US$900

I have 2 pre's already but to be honest this is a fantasy list or at least something to aim for! The actual budget (especially this close to Christmas) is about 0.50!

My current mic is a Rode NT2 (about 3 years old now) and I have been looking for about 3 months umming and ahhing what to get.

Some sensible choices there - I have been looking the sE mics for some time, none of the reviews I have read have been able to find a bad word to say about them. Except that the finish is susceptible to fingerprints!

I can't speak of the SE line as I have yet to hear it. Are these more of the sameo Chinese mics? If so mmm-kay.

You can drop the U87 from the "list" and throw in a multi pattern Audio Technica if you like, forget the Beyer 201's, the Sennheiser 421's and the 441 and just go for 57's .. That should trim a lot off the cost.

But what I originally posted is , as I said, what I consider to be a bare minimum for a respectable studio .. Of course if all you're doing is recording yourself, then by all means, just get what you need. On the other hand, if you intend to book your room to clients, I personally wouldn't go to a studio that had anything less.
