For a rough mix but I wouldn't expect accurate results. PA speakers are meant to shoot sound out to a crowd. They aren't high fidelity. They are usually tuned and have peaks and are not meant to sit close to you. The room you put them in is going to be a problem. I think you would be better off with small computer speakers and even headphones over a PA speaker.

But if you are truly stuck, then do the mix, but then take it to other places to play it back and check yourself. Play it on an Ipod, play it in the car, play it on the old man's living room stereo, play it at your buddies house, play it on a laptop, and so on.

Point is, you'll need to check it on as many different systems as you can so you can get as close as possible.

I can't imagine you will be able to listen on those monitors for very long. I tried using an old set of Traynor PA monitors at my old place. They were loud just above 0. It was almost impossible to get them quiet enough not to hurt.

Fuse those puppy's.

Run a regular auto type inline fuse holder in your plus side wire, at the back of the speaker. Start with like a 1 or 1.5 amp fast blow bus fuse and see how easy it blows. Work on up in size if they blow to easy. NS-10m's for instance like a 2- 3 amp fast blow depending on your tracks, amp. etc. The idea is obviously to get the fuse to blow before your speakers.

It takes a real spike to blow for protection. They should last a long time, but will certainly blow and save your monitors every time.

If you've blown your monitor speakers up, you're monitoring too loudly. You'll never get a good mix that way. Ya get the best mixes when your monitors are not turned up much. You have to learn how to listen. It doesn't have anything to do with how much boom to the bass you get. It matters if you can hear it at a very low listening level. So get your monitor speakers fixed and don't turn them up so loud anymore. Using PA speakers is like trying to wipe your butt with corncobs. I don't think we want to go there do we? No.
