Shit, twice in one week where Mike and I are in 150% agreement...at least about how the T-L-A/H-H-B/M-O-U-S-E crap sounds.

The concept of a 'tube console' is wonderful, however the tube in that hunk of shit is employed as a marketing tool, not for reasons of sound. If you want a 'tube desk', get a tube desk...if you want a desk with some tubes in it, the Manley 16x 2 mixers are pretty damn good [Mike, if you haven't tried one, then shut the fuck up].

Other than that, you might try getting a desk that sounds good overall, and picking up some 'toob' mic pre's/eq's/compressors/space heaters.

TLA is famous for grafting tubes onto circuits that are essentially solid-state, (with lotsa chips if I recall) and I'm sure this would be the case here. Do you know of a single TLA product that anyone is salivating for, socking money away for...?

Plus, imagine what this would do to your HVAC load! I think the "phew" factor would take on an entirely different meaning.

That's funny...
I was thinking to start a TLA thread more than once....
Cause, when I listen to you guys (USA) there are a lot of negative comments for TLA..
When I talk to some English engineers, a lot of them seem to really like the TLA stuff...

Let's go on about this...

I always had/have the idea that English records have a different sound than American.
SO:
Can that also be the reason why US-engineers hate TLA and English love it???!
TASTE? :)

So is the TLA-stuff more suiteble for the English (/European) market??
:( ]

So... British & US sound......
:D

I don't care what the magazine reviewers say, a lot of the stuff is crapBear

OK.... but I was not talking about reviews... I was talking about "ACTUAL" engineers....
remember? :)

Let me try to re-do my question (if it's not clear...)

Can it be that the British like the TLA and the Amercians hate it BECAUSE they have a different style of recording/mixing/mastering ???

(You can say a lot about the Brits, but they don't MASTER as ridiculous loud as some Americans... ;) )

Alot of people seem to compare alot of things with Neves because they were made on an island in the N. Atlantic.

I don't really hear much difference in the 'sound' of a whole lot of 'english/european' recordings than I do with recordings in the US. There are also people I've met here in the good ol' United Snakes of Amerikkka' that seem to like the TLA stuff too.

Then again 14% of the world's male population likes to take it in the arse. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it just doesn't work for me...nor does any of the product I've heard from TLAudio.

Your mileage may vary.

One thing though about the Brits that I really admire is that there seems to be a total abandon of how sound is sculpted to achieve an end, where as here in the states the majority consensus seems to take on more of a purist approach. I think the "anything goes" approach seems more fun, and if I have to squash it, phase or eq the hell out of it, put a mic up a chimney or dedicate all this to tape then I am fine with that. Sure, waiting until the mix for dynamics and eq is safe, but who the hell wants to be in a box?

lets be reasonable : the mixer in question sounds like shit , thats a fact ! one of the reasons it does so :
RIBBON CABLE !!

any mixer that has ribbon cable in it for the balanced (so called mostly) audio wiring is gonna have crosstalk of the worst kind.......

ohh and fletch : can you find me an extension card for my sony mxp 2000 ? i need to service that baby and need to do it soon:-)
the MCI JH 500 is goners......its now part of the pink floyd mixer that was used to do dark side of the moon.....56 frame monster sitting in marseille france.....ciao

TLA ...?

Hmmmm!

I have no desk or console, only outboard (a LOT of it) and Pro Tools, I mix all in PT and select outboard for tonal color & performance. I have to use ALL of it at once to get a whole band into my DAW.

I have 2 x TLA pieces..

1 x Grey classic series EQ1 (discontinued)
1 x 5051 (or in USA HHB Radius 40)

for a long time an RE 20 and the EQ 1 was my main vocal channel! I just seemed to dig it, so did my clients..

Nowadays the TLA stuff is relegated to near the bottom of my list of units to use, but I defend it somewhat and still make use of em. Overdriven vocals are cool on em for example, some guide gtrs done on the EQ1 are never bettered with 'cooler equipment'.

I do however, concur with Fletcher that the C1 compressor felates horned members of the sheep family on a fulltime basis.

:)
