just read about people's DAW's and was amazed.

genarally more gadgets and gizmos involved than people in a hollywood movie.

so i was just wondering how long it took you guys to set it up...

and please be realistic. 8-)

If your talking about building the PC from components, installing software, configuring tweaking and testing a brand new set up it takes me about a day assuming all of the stuff is on hand.

Things like formatting huge drives and downloading patches takes time. Depending on what other software you need those installs can take a little time. A sampler such as kontact for example has several disks full of sounds that need to be copied over.

What isn't included in that time is finding and downloading impulses for SIR, searching for cool free softsynths or effects and downloading those etc. It also doesn't include any tweaking of the DAW app environment for creature comforts.

I remember when you said your life is too short for PCs (I think that was you anyway). I am a PC user, and it took me about 8-10 hours from motherboard in the box to recording tracks. It took me another several months I'd guess to learn all that is needed to ensure a proper build, including knowing the ins and outs of XP. Semms like a lot, I know, but for my efforts I have a deeper understanding of digital audio and computing in general (an area which greatly interests me), adn I know exactly what is going on inside my box, which is comforting. Plus, it cost less than a grand for an ass kicking little machine.

High school kids are building computers these days. You almost can't go wrong, although it helps to have a friend to guide you through. Once you build that 1st computer you are well on your way to being liberated from shelling out the big bucks for a shop to build / modify your computers. These days you almost HAVE to be a computer geek. Web sites like http://www.techsupportforum.com can help you. I've saved so much $$ because of that site and usually I get my questions answered within hours.

You should be able to assemble the components in the case in around an hour (first timers a little longer). If you like to neatly route and zip tie all the cables you can add another 15 to 30 mins. or so. The rest of your time is spent installing OS and Apps. It's pretty mind numbing so I usually have another machine nearby so I can game or surf while the software loads and updates.

Another fun thing to do if I'm really bored is harrass the guys on the MAC forums with polls and questions. :lol: :lol: :lol:

some lists were longer than the end titles of "titanic" :shock: :shock:

so i was wondering how much time was spent building these "monsters of rock".... :twisted:

but actually i was thinking about how much research that must have been involved BEFORE building them...... i can't imagine...

anyway.........

I don't know about the others but for me choosing parts is half the fun. It's kind of like picking the options you want on your new car.

I make my living building and maintaining networks by day and I've been building gaming systems for years so PC's are sort of in my blood. I know what I want from a machine and how to get it so choosing parts is easy for me.

Software is a different story and a headache we all share whether it's MAC or PC. That's where these forums are so valuable IMO.

Anyway great question, keep'em coming. 8-)

Are you implying that no research was required prior to building a Mac?

I know you Applephiles are a devout breed, but I didn't realize you believed that their machines were the result of divine inspiration :P

I won't get a mac until i can build it myself (wich will probably bee soon).

I realise that they come from a factory, my point was that everything that is manufactured (on whatever scale) requires planning and research if it is to be a success.
