Hey- I'm putting together a new win2k PC, and wanted some input on my choices so far- apparently I just hit some arcane multibutton function, and got kicked out, so it's possible you all will see the first half of a similar post- sorry, if so...
OK, here's what I have. I was going to go dual PIII, but haven't seen a compelling argument that it's really going to net me much. From what I understand, Windows will not spread a single application across two processors. I may be wrong, however.
Asus A7V266 mobo w/Athlon XP 1700 (at least)
1G DDR266 ram
Adaptec SCSI card
PLEXTOR SCSI CD-RW
20G IBM ATA66/7200 (OS & apps)
*either 40G IBM ATA66/7200 drive
*or (2) 18G UW160 SCSI 7200 drives
Matrox G450 32meg Dual Head vid. card
Floppy, CDRom, adequate cooling, etc.
RME Hammerfall DSP/Multiface
I will be running Samplitude and some sort of backup utility that can span CDR's (ideas?).
I appreciate any thoughts anyone has on this setup... Thanks!

Go with the SCSI hard drive if you can afford it. I went ATA/100 with the new system I built, and I am now saving up my pennies to get the SCSI/160.
Not sure about Samplitude, but my understanding with Cubase's latest version is that it *will* use both processors. Also from Opus' post above, it sounds like yourplug-inswill benefit from it. Finally, Opus made no reference to the chipset on your dual-processor mobo, although he warned me away earlier from using the Intel i820 chipset (for dual PIIIs). Lots of problems I guess. I am not sure what is on the mobo you listed, but I am *sure* that Opus would've chimed in if was not up to par.

Plus, I read recently that the AMD chipset is being phased-out. A lot of system builders are now using the Ali chipset based mobos, and LOVE them. How is it for audio apps? I wish I knew the answer to that. Anyway...check this out...

Well, I *could* use the Tyan Tiger mobo for dual Athlon MP's, and I think Intel has come out with another multiprocessor chipset (840?), but I understood that win2k would assign processing to seperate processors *by program*, i.e., it's only really faster with multiple apps open. If this is mistaken, then great- multiprocessor system it is. Any recommended combos?

Some of the Via chipsets arent bad..some are just unpredictable on whether they will allow you to work efficiently or not. If you configure the board correctly along with your system it "should" work just fine. Yes AMD chipsets are horrible to say the least for audio..as for new chipsets such as the Ali...wouldnt go that route personally! Chipsets do work..but for audio they are completely different in specs. Any computer store that I talk to say that I dont know what I am talking about..I then tell them, well do you do Audio DAW system tech support? they say no..I say fuck you then!! ha ha ha ha!!!
Anyhue...With AMD you are stuck with AMD or Via chipsets..Intel, every one but AMD!!
Dual processors work with any app and is not just meant for multiple app workloads..it's meant for multiple processing..whether it is one app or two..
To me Tyan is a no no!! It's too narrow minded of a board..you have to have a specific brand of memory and a specific model power supply..brings prices higher that way! Asus and Abit are the best choices for audio systems..hands down.
I've heard great responses from the board mentioned in your setup..as far as dual AMD...not sure yet..

Actually W2K in multiprocessor mode is designed for multi-threaded apps. The threads are subprocesses within the application that W2K assigns to one processor or the other making the app much more efficient than it would be in single processor mode. Very cool for recording. Not all applications are designed to be multi-threaded.
