I was given a Quadra 840AV that I would like to use as a two track recorder for recording practice sessions. My other Macs get used for MIDI and virtual synths. Where is the best place to find recording software for such an old machine. Is there anyone who has some System 7 stuff they want to sell? What programs (and version S) are the best to use on an 840AV? Is it even worth the effort to try and use such an old machine(though I think Sys 7 is the best OS ever made)? Your replies are much appreciated

Oddly enough, I just bought a Quadra 840AV system a couple of months ago for $30, complete with monitor, 2 SCSI ext HDDs, scanner, and lazer printer. It's in mint condition! It only has 32Mb RAM.
Mine has OS 7.6, but the Quadra 840AV can be updated to OS 8.1 (no further). The problem is that I can't find a copy of OS 8 ANYWHERE! Nobody is selling it, and Apple hasn't released it for free download yet. But, go figure ... the update from OS 8 to OS 8.1 is a freebie.
I really haven't messed with it much yet, and I have no idea what I'm going to actually do with it. For the time being, it's on the back burner. If you have any good ideas for me, by all means, let me know.

Hi,
try this one: Coaster
It's a simple recording software and doesn't need much resources.

You might want to track down copies of SoundEdit16 and Sound Designer II
Deck 2 might work
btw, the 840av maxes out at 128megs of ram.
adding an L2 cache will help quite a bit, as will adding more VRAM, depending on which monitor output you use it will take up system ram (and slow ya down!)

I'm still using my 8500 everyday, it's the only thing that will still talk to my 12 yr old printer for my Finale files- . But my monitor port is acting up and it's making life difficult. If you want to send the monitor port from your 8500 to Wisconsin, I'll happily send you any one of the 4 Quadras!! :D

Heh, well, if you go to the Goodwill store in El Toro, CA, you might be able to pick it up cheap.
They also were unloading a Lowrey organ...it looked kinda like a Hammong A100. I might've been interested but I was trying to "upload" stuff rather than "download".

An old version of Peak .... 5.4 or 5.6 ??
should run in system 7 unless there is a 603/604 type of issue.
I like 8.6.
It took a hile for me to move from 7 but I diod and I didn't regret it.
I think the 9500/7300/9600 are the oldest machines worth playing with. An 86 probably fits in there somewhere..... PCI and 604s.
Use a Tango FW card and you have acces to all the cheaper IDE drives, FW and USB2.0 stuff.
The old quadra might be cool as a spectrum analyser or a Reverb unit with that Lexicon card, if you can find one.
