If I wanted to record a 5 piece drum set using 4 mics, would I mic the bass drum, snare and then use 2 overheads?

It depends on the kit, the room, and your mic selection.

My starting point would probably be 2 overheads in the "recorderman" setup, another front mic in front of the kick (these are actually 3 mics in a Glyn Johns type setup).

The 4th mic would be a crotch mic, to give me another color for kick and snare.

My 5th and 6th mics would be a close up on the kick and snare....

Here is something fun to try! I've done this on a couple of jazz recordings. I put 2 lavalier news anchor style microphones on the drummer's body and one in the kick drum. It sounded fabulous in the drummer felt like it sounded like he was sitting behind his kit on playback. Just put one near each shoulder and tape them down good with plenty of duct tape!

Heck, if the drummer had pierced ears you could.....
