I have got to the point where i need to build a new PC as a DAW as my old Athlon machine just won't cut it anymore with all the new software i am running
i.e. Superior Drummer 2.0, EZKeys, Pod Farm plugins etc. Also I want to upgrade to using Pro Tools 10.

The question is for Audio am i better with a xeon or an i7?

The two chips listed below are both within my budget for a CPU of aroun £250 so which would be better in a DAW?
Any help much appreciated!

I just got myself a new i 7 but my buddy and former engineering supervisor at NBC radio likes the Xeon. But you don't find Xeon processors in your average high-end laptop. But if you're building up a desktop machine, I'd say go for the Xeon. Its primary design was for servers and so is quite robust. It was developed for another market that required longevity and stability. And I would imagine those processors are less prone to failure. Mike runs his ProTools 10 on his Xeon. Others run their ProTools on i 7's. And I'm sure other folks here will give you other reasons for their decisions.

My two cents as well. Both will run the SW you listed finel but Remy hit it on the head. Xeons are built to be robust and reliable in professional environments. i series are built for speed and consumer machines. All that said, an i7 is a screamer for gaming and other apps.
I've used Xeons forever (8 years) on two workstations running Nuendo and a boatload of NI and Toontrack stuff and not a single issue.
