Yes, both the amp and the board would risk destruction if you were to hook them up via the speaker out.

A DI that can tap the speaker output would do. I think b*hringer has a cheap one. The amp would still need a load though.

Without filtering this would sound kind of bad for overdriven sounds though.

All guitar heads have either a headphone or line out. If you use that then you're not getting the 100 watts of juice from the output so you wont fry anything.

Definitely not. In fact if it's a vintage amp it allmost certainly doesn't. I've seen (rarely) some old fender's with a "recording out", which would do the trick. Look on the back of your guy's amp for either, "recording out" "pre out" or "line out". Any of those will give you what you want.... but I wouldn't recomend recording that way unless you're planning on using some sort of speaker simulator effect later on. The speaker cabinet on a guitar amp is usually responsible for a significant part of the sound you hear. You'll get the most natural sound with a microphone. Whatever you do, don't run the amp without it being connected to some speakers. Especially if it's a tube amp. You could blow a transformer or something else.

A lot of newer combos and heads have the Line out my marshall does but almost all the old ones I've seen don't. If he has a line out or DI out as my marshall calls it then that should work without frying your board.
