i have heard the JLMTMP8 it's ok but i would steer closer to the API myself.
if it is only drums then you would not need much gain?i.e will they be used for anything else?

the Chandler is quite different to the API or the JLM TMP8
haven't heard the Buzz unit but it's structure is a little different again to the API and JLM or Chandler

all of these are ... in a sense ... boutique and so you will just need to audition them to know for sure

thanks for the replies guys. i've heard good and not so good things about the sebatron, the biggest complaint seems to be the "wooly" sound. i know they're popular around here, but this is from someone who's opinion i trust, and who has a boatload of gear. i'm aware all the other pres i mentioned are different, but i'm just trying to get something on par with these brands in terms of quality and respectability. something that any pro studio would proudly slot in between a rack of V76's and 1073's.

basically i want something i won't ever want to replace, regardless how many other pres i buy down the track. i'm pretty sure the API is in that league. i'm just trying to work out if the JLM is as well considering it's around half the cost per channel.

i wouldn't call our sebatron vmp4000e wooly by any means. it has a bottom end punch which suits the drums perfectly. it's the latest version.
but otherwise , as Remy said , i would suggest the API as they are the ones that all the big hits are recorded on.

The JLM is good
... but you will never know for sure until you also own an API

is down to the Neve and API

I see no harm in owning one of the API dual or quads

Neve Portico series (5012) completely rocks on drums I agree with Remy on that. You should really take a look at the neve Portico 5012 it is really awesome.
