I am building my new system and am considering removing it from my network. This poses a problem since for my backups.

If I want my backups to run and the pc is not on the network, I will need to run the volume shadow copy & task scheduler services.

If I run these on another box, I will have to start all the networking services.

Any ideas on which is the best approach?

Doing the system restore or any built in windows back up feature isn't the way to go..all it does is add extra junk to your drive that you don't need...plus it will run in the background when you least want it to.
Backing up is important and as Philly mentioned extra hard drives are the way to go...hard drives are so cheap these days and so are hot swappable IDE bays...you can get one for 26 bucks at Mwave.com
other ways to do this is get a DVR..I have one..have to say it's nice to write to a 4+ GB disk!
