My laptop has only one firewire port, for which I may want to use a firebox. Would USB provide sufficient performance for hooking up an external hard drive to record to?
USB is not that reliable for external hard drives when dealing with audio..your best bet is to either do what ADK recommended by getting a carbus Firewire card or get yourself an RME audio card that connects to a cardbus for your laptop...this way your firewire port on your laptop is free for an external hard drive.
I'd truly stay away from Firewire based audio devices for now...
Also please try to keep one thread going and not multiple threads. Too many threads make it harder for people to search for answers when they could be kept in one place for people to read!
