Howdy
I have a P3/1Ghz (or something, where can I find all the technical BS about my MOBO on a PC) currently with a Frontier Designs WaveCenter PCI card. I'm looking to turn this strictly into a "synth" machine.
What is a good soundcard to give me low latency playback of synths? I guess I really only need two MIDI in and out, SP/DIF (ADAT is nice for multi-channel) and analaog out.
Also looking for some kind of standalone softsynth host. I'll be running mostly Native Instruments stuff.

check out the creamware pulsar scope fusion series. this card has onboard DSP's to play all those synths etc. and there are a few options (depending on which one you get) as far as ins/outs. their basic pulsar has ADAT I/O x2, MIDI I/O/T, S/PDIF I/O and analog rca I/O. go to creamware.com

My vote goes to RME. The Hammerfall series runs stably at 128 samples with a decent system. I even tried 64 samples but the recording wouldn't always come out perfectly clean ... if you're only playing VST synths it might work at the low latency for you, though.

Steinberg has a program called V-Stack.
This is exactly what you are looking for as it incorporates the VST System Link and runs any VST instrument you so desire!
Check it out!
As far as a card goes...shouldn't matter as long as you can adjust the buffer settings on it so it is low enough for real time playing!
