Hello,
I am a total newbie, so please be patient
I am an musician will-be, I am just starting to take singing classes and trying to learn music, own a piano and a guitar although for now only my 3 year old plays with them.
My current 4yr old HP laptop is dying and I need to buy new equipment anyway and I want to think ahead about having my studio at home
I know a computer will be something I will need even though I know close to nothing about music recording.I do know I want to record my own music, make videos, etc etc.
Soooo, I have a quote from Dell for a Desktop Inspiron 580s, Intel Core i5-650 processor(4MB Cache, 3.20GHz) for $800 6GB RAM
I looked at aDK and PCAudiolabs but that seems out of my budget, same with an iMac
What do you think? Go for the Dell or wait to save more money and hope my HP laptop holds up until then?
Also, should I get a similar quote from HP? For some reason I usually see Dell referenced in music users more than HP, I am told HP has horrible Customer services, I ever had to use them so I really dont know
Thank you!

I personally have had bad luck with both Dell and HP. If you really want to record it may be best to build your own. It is way cheaper. Also if you use Windows get Windows 7 Professional. I suggest the pro version because it as a really cool compatability program. The biggest thing I hate about Vista is the compatability issues. I know it works because I have used it several times already.
I should first suggest you get a back up drive, just in case your computer does crash. I'm using an old internal hard drive it an enclosure. That is the cheapest way to do it.

They all have terrible customer service after the bumper to bumper warranty runs out. How is your laptop dying? Honestly, it would be best to replace a hard drive or ram stick or a screen (easier than you think) and save your pennies for an actual DAW computer if music production is your chosen path. Of course if your particular HP is one of the ones with the semi faulty nVidia chip you will be chained to a laptop cooling pad to keep it functioning without error. Don't ask me how I know.
