I am recording voice only, one at a time. I am using a Tascam US-122 and Shure SM58 microphone (dynamic microphone). The signal is very low--setting the gain all the way up on the US-122l still results in a very soft recording. When I go to replay the recording, I still have to turn up the volume almost the entire way to hear it. Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong?

the tascam us-122 just doesn't amplify the signal that much. i don't remember how much the preamp boosts it but that's part of the reason i'm selling mine and trying a different unit. When i recorded - I just made sure the phantom power was switched on if I had a condensor mic - had the gain quite high - and then i had to amplify each wave in cubase sx after recording. an easy way to do this was to grab the double arrow at the top of the wave and drag up to increase about 10 db. but i have no idea what program you are using.
