I can say that I rely more on ears to get a better sound. Personally I use Adobe audition parametric equalizer for mastering work and for me it gets the job done. I think that the most important is not alone that brand but a mastering equalizer must have the ability to:

1.) Cut and Boost in certain frequency range.
2.) Adjust the Q.
3.) Do basic low pass filtering.
4.) Do basic high pass filtering.

And even more important: Do you know how to use that specific mastering EQ? Some mistakes is being obsessed with gears but cannot even master how to use it. In my experience, even an engineer who has the mastery of cheaper equalizers can get a better mastering sound than a noob getting obsessed with gears and does not even know how to maximize its use.

Hi Audirec.
Well, you stated the obvious and basics of most any EQ correctly...

I agree about noobs on HiEnd gear and Pros on budget devices, but Adobe APE is not cutting it for me...
I want to get in to the nervs and veins of a song and give it vitamins, minerals and the occasional tripple bypass....
That takes a range of tools with outstanding performance. And, sadly, a pile of cash, too.
I tested and own a small rack of good EQs and I need them all... The latest I got is the SPL PQ - Mastering Edition 2050 .
