Hello!

I once heard a comparison between an old ribbon and a new sennheiser, on voice, and was quite taken away with the natural, non-hyped texture of the ribbon. Alwaz wanted to have one since.

Now, being a bit impatient as i am i was looking at this :

I would like to use them for guitars, overheads and vocals. I dont own any steller pres, so maybe i should get myself a brick first. Currently Behringers (UB and Xenex) and Ted Fletchers on the E-mu 1820m.

But is this a wise investment. Should i just wait out for an Royer or an AEA etc.. (forever) ?

The deal is that i need more mics, and if not these, id prolly be going in for a pair of M-audio Solaris, or the Kel Audio HM-1. I still don't have a nice pre, but work demands mics first.

AS for the brick, I also am in need of a good DI, my cheapest alternative would be the Benhringer DI100 (The DI120 is no longer usable, too dam noisy, but i do have the option of the Line6 available to me). I I were to go with the Brick, is the DI real good ?

About Mics and DIs

BonJour Chaps, for some good ribbon mics for those on a budget have a look at a mob called Alctron. They claim some outrageous things that by rights a ribbon mic should not do, this 'cause they come stuffed with foam. A small modification, ie removing the foam renders this an awesome bang for buck mic, however you must then handle with care! or you'll blow the ribbon. Samson are another producer of budget mics, the CO2 matched pencil condensers are awesome for XYstereo recording, drum overheads, accoustic guitar, I've even used them on an accordian. Samson make or made a ribbon mic, haven't used it but they do good stuff cheap.
The Behringer DI100, a world class DI. It gets used by world class engineers. One thing Behringer did well. For a cheap pre their Tube UltraGain Mic100 will get you out of trouble, probably a better choice for live instruments than recording due to it adding a little noise. I hear good things of the PreSonus Blue Tube, indeed my Firebox has awesome mic pre's as do alot of new interface equiptment on the market.
But Sidhu if you do go for a ribbon mic, a really nice pre is a must. dbx produce a rack mounted channel strip that IMO would relly compliment a ribbon or large condenser mic harmoniously.

I've never seen a ribbon mic of this style (or any) that is made to be used on a snare drum?!?! I have the APEX210, the 1st cheap, Chinese ribbon mic they put out - you're not even supposed to put it in a horizontal position they say. I can't imagine that 2 micron thinck ribbon staying in place facing downward and getting smacked with a drumstick.
