have any of you tested the Fantom-S? I am disappointed that Roland stil does not have a keyboard with a lightpipe card and that poliphony is till the basic 64 notes.
Would you go for a software sampler like Gigastudio?

Does the XP80 run out of notes just when you play a single patch or when you use it as a multitimbral tone generator? If it runs out using it as a TG, I'd have to say just record the tracks as audio.
Of course, if that's a major annoyance, get someting else. To me, 64 notes is more than enough.
The other issue is how realistic do you want things to sound? String libraries, if you play them like a keyboard player, will always sound sampled. If you learn the tricks, arrange for strings, add all the nuance and use the different articulations you can come closer to sounding "real".
If you just want "cool pads" almost anything out there will do. I've really been liking my Yamaha Motif.
Anyhow, there's nothing like a RAM-based soft sampler like Giga or HALion. Giga really likes its own PC (its what I use, but I'm using it less and less). HALion can be used as a VSTi, making organization of songs much easier. If you use Logic, check out the EXS24. Even though its not streaming based, its very powerful and fast within Logic.
For drums, check out something like Native Instrument's Battery. If you want hardware, get some MPC-based thing.

If you need imitative sounds that are realistic, streaming-based samplers are the way to go. Hardware synths don't even come close.
