I just noticed the RNLA on FMR's website as well, came here to see if anyone's heard one yet. Given how preeminently useful the RNC is, this one should be interesting! I've been using the RNC in 'supernice mode' as a kind of mastering limiter anyway...

[computer main outs -> Sebatron VMP2000e -> RNC -> computer inputs] very nice for electro tracks

FMR has a bunch of info online for the RNLA now... http://www.fmraudio.com including the owner's manual.
Balanced/unbalanced outputs will be a welcomed change.

Also noticed something odd in the manual...

The original RNC was, in fact, based upon an optical gain element that was ultimately rejected (and tucked away) due to its imparting of a sonic signature (i.e., "color").

but then they write...

The RNC was designed to be somewhat neutral while the RNLA was designed to deliberately color the sound.

Either way I'm looking forward to auditioning this unit! In place of the supernice Mode they've got a Log Release function.

this control (“Log Rel”) can help restore some “punch” that can get lost without an acceleration of the release envelope. So, when Log Rel is on, we accelerate the release time as a function of gain reduction amount.

Tastey!!!

The controls layout reminds me a bit of the 1176LN comp/limiter...

What is odd about this? They wanted the RNC to be more transparent, but it originally wasn't, so they made changes. Perhaps they mention this because it's what they have based the RNLA off of.

Some of us have spent some times with it, but are not sure if it's safe to talk about it yet.

Isn't this essentially SPAM, considering that a dealer posted it? I guess that buying banner ads on RO now entitles Nathan (ATLAS) to SPAM the site. This kind of thing never used to happen, no matter how much ad revenue was being generated. It seems RO is headed towards becoming nothing more than another "mouthpiece" for gear dealers like PSW and GS. Too bad. :(

I guess McQuilken (aka; Ferd Berffel) will get his way and again be able to claim, "There's a buzz on RO about FMR products". Funny how this stuff works out.

Hey, I just thought it was pretty cool...I wasn't look for a fight, or negativity. If that's the way you see it, I'm sorry about it Kurt. Life is way too short to worry about little stuff like what you are talking about here. I like gear, always have, always will. If you don't like it, and it's such a big deal, then just delete the thread. I won't lose any sleep over it.

Nathan,
I'm not looking to fight either. This has nothing to do with the product itself. This kind of thing (especially from manufacturers or dealers) has always been discouraged since before I joined RO in early '02. I was just surprised to see it being allowed to stand. Seeing as we haven't let a lot of other people cross the line, I am wondering why your post was allowed to stand as is. It doesn't seem very fair to me. I do not mod this forum so I do not have the ability to bin the topic ... If I did, I would have.

You should talk to Chris about getting your own forum (as an Banner Ad customer you can do this) where you can do the "SPAM-A-LOT" all you want.

You can also send me any press releases that you want posted in the Reviews section. I will be glad to post them for you there.

No hard feelings I hope.

Not trying to pile on here, but...

I don't see the big issue here. It's not like Nathan is telling people how great it is. It's not like he's suggesting people even come to him and buy it.

He posted it, I'm assuming, because he had the early drop on the info and decided to keep us posted. He beat me to the punch - as soon as I found out about it (which was about 30 minutes after he made his post), I came here to do the same thing.

The only difference is that I'm not a dealer for FMR.

I am a dealer for Audix and I do sing their praises, but I draw the line at not overtly soliciting to folks in public on these forums. (Such as, when people ask "What's the best mic for overheads??" I don't say "The Audix xxx - you should check out my website, I'll give you a good deal.") By the same concept, I don't think Nathan has done anything wrong here. It is, afterall the Pro Audio Gear Forum and he's posting legitimate information regarding a piece of gear.

I would hate to think that Nathan, Chris (Little Dog), or myself not be allowed to answer any questions about gear solely based on the fact that we sell stuff.

Perhaps you've seen a lot of spamming in the past and have been burned by it or turned off, but I geniunely don't believe that's what the dude was doing.

That's the difference.

To me it's a really big deal that FMR has come out with an opto LA. Big news.

Well Carvin makes one for $219 ... and it's dual mono. I still wouldn't recommend it and I doubt that it's worth mentioning. Just because a compressor is "opto" doesn't guarantee that it's any good.

.... The thing is one person shouldn't be treated one way while another person is treated differently. If a person is a dealer or a manufacturer, the onus of responsibility is upon them not to abuse the boards.

If we don't keep a lid on this kind of thing, RO will be nothing but a SPAM site like many of the other sites. A strict no spam policy has been one of the things that has kept RO a notch above the rest. This is not personal, I have no feelings one way or the other regarding Nathan and his store.

So we either stop complaining about SPAM altogether and leave it all or we don't allow any of it. Either way is fine with me. Let's just be consistent.

Kurt,

Thanks for your third post. It clarified your position in a way that the first post did not. I think that's why a lot of us reacted negatively to your first post. The amount of sarcasm somewhat clouded the point you were trying to make.

Nathan,

I appreciate the way you handled Kurts reaction in your second post. That kind of professionalism makes me much more inclined to send my pro audio business your way than any amount of alleged spam you could post.

I guess Nathan's post would meet the some strict requirements to be considered spam, but really it didn't bother me. Sometimes we actually do find out about new gear from dealers.

I think gearslutz has it right with their "new product alert" forum. Anybody, including dealers and manufacturers, can post into that and it's not spam. Without a catch-all like that the line gets blurred in the other forums on message boards.

I doubt he's too concerned about it either way. He seems to be doing fine as the buzz on his products is pretty strong all around, despite your efforts to kill it.
