Rather than asking ambiguous questions with no substance or background, perhaps you could tell us about your gear, your software, and what you want to do with it. Then we'd be able to understand where you're coming from and where you want to go.

I use a Mackie SR24 at my church. It's OK. My personal board is an Allen and Heath Mixwizard. I much prefer the EQ on the A&H. If I'm recording to a DAW with either board I record straight out of the preamps (via direct outs on the A&H, or from the inserts on the Mackie). Any mixing or EQ I want to do will happen in the DAW. I have 24 inputs on my DAW, so I have no reason to create submixes when recording.

The answer is they are fine, as is the AH and others of that ilk. I use a SR 24 to monitor my DAW ....

While it does run out of headroom rather quickly, and the EQ is a bit limited, other than that, it works fine for this application as long as it isn't pushed too hard.

I would not hesitate to use an SR24 to track, if I had no other alternitive. The pres are as good as anything you will find in the budget or mid level offerings with the exception of GT's "The Brick" and even the newest EQ in the ONYX still does not offer adjustable "Q" control on the mid bands. I doubt that would make a diiference anyway .... the 8 Bus Mackies have adjustable "Q" but the EQ still sort of sucks.

I actually had the chance at one point to compare the performance of the SR 24vlz to a 1604vlz and my ears said the SR 24 won hands down! I don't know why this is, I can only assume the SR 24 has a better power supply or grounding .... something like that.

That all being said, I would not spend any more for a small mixer of this type. The issues the SR 24 has, are the same across the board when it comes to small mixers. There's only so much that can be done with small power supplies and restricted space requirements with any low cost product.
