In the market for recording software, but don't want to pay the bucks for Producer Edition. I have read through the product description and several reviews of the software. Does the SE version have the ability to compress the recording of vocals or other instruments? The other PE-only features would be of little value to me.

I started out with SE3.1 and moved to PE3.1. To my knowledge, there are no built-in effects in SE4, so you'd have to buy some plug ins or go with freeware. You'll want to have a variety of different plugs in any case. I use the Sonitus embedded EQ fairly often with basic tracks when mixing, but usually use other compressors for vocals, guitar/bass and drums.

....as a side note..... not that it answers your question.....

Sonar 4 Producer Edition is buggy as hell..... at least for me anyway. It has serious MIDI IN/OUT issues that were not present in all of the previous versions that we've used for years.

I wouldn't be surprised if they had to release a patch to fix whatever is clearly broken with that latest version of the program. Anyone contemplating buying this latest version should probably scan the Internet for bug reports from other people to check compatability issues with hardware they may already own.
