I'm looking to buy some sort of package of sampled orchestral osunds, but I really don't have a clue what I'm doing. I understand real instruments much better than software controlled ones. I really just want something that I can use to add some string arrangements to my pop/rock music. Really, I'm far more interested in the strings than I am in any of the other instrument families. Since Audition doesn't support VSTi or MIDI, I will probably be switching soon to Cubase and would like something that will integrate well with that. Also, the simpler the UI, the better, IMO.

Is there any way I can achieve this for around $300 or less? I'm open to any ideas.

The main options for around $300 are Garritan Personal Orchestra (GPO 2nd Edition - $199), Kirk Hunter Emerald ($299), East West Quantum Leap Silver Pro XP ($295), and MOTU's Symphonic Instrument ($299). Halion String Edition is $399. It's probably a good idea to check out demos one their websites, or a retailer (Audiomidi.com has some demos for most) before deciding which you prefer.

None in this range (that I know of - haven't used MOTU's MSI or Halion Strings Ed) have a wide range of articulations or layers, but can do the job for backing strings in a pop or rock arrangement. They will sound somewhat different from one another depending on the hall used, recording approach, and programming choices.

If you simply search something for add some arrangements to your tracks,
why don't try a free Vst plug in?

I use the Cellofan, it is really nice. When mixed to other tracks, it seems a real cello.
There are loads of free plug ins out there. if you have the time for search, you probably will catch something for your needs.
