I just got a gig handed to me (not really "handed" - I'm under contract for it...) that is friggin cool. I can't really specify the artist/group's name, but I can tell you that it ISN'T the Mexican Brass...eh! ( I haven't read the details of the contract yet, so I don't know if I can state that I'm actuallyl recording them yet, otherwise, I would shout it from the rooftops.)

It's going to be a live gig with the college in the area and they have given permission for me to be there and roll tape. Of course, there's all sorts of restrictions on selling it/posting it, etc.

FWIW, I'm wetting myself with excitement - hopefully they'll let me list them as recording credits on my webpage. 8-)

No, no, no....

I have the contract with the college. The group has a contract with the college. I get paid by the college. In other words, I just have to make sure that I don't break any of the rules in the contract between the college and the group, not my contract with the college. In other words, I just happen to be in the right place at the right time.

Yeah, see that's the great part. There is a 'no record' clause in the contract, but they've agreed to waive that portion of the contract so long as we don't profit from the CDs. In other words - we'll make copies for prospective students and for donors, but not for sale to the general public.

I'm meeting with the guys next Friday to discuss and make sure that all is "kosher." I'm sure if they have any issues, they'll let me know. I do have an "in" with them though - I've studied with 2 of the horn players that used to play with their ensemble.

Okay - so the gig is done and after having spoken with the players and the management - I'm now officially allowed to say --

I recorded the Canadian Brass tonight and boy was it a hell of a concert. They sure can put on a show. There wasn't a dry seat in the house :shock:

Now all I have to do is talk them into letting me put up demos of the recording on my site. I think I might be able to do this with a little finesse. These guys are a class act and are really down to earth. Far better than most "celebrities" I've dealt with. (Many of whom I can't even name here for fear of a friggin law suit -- "You can record me - BUT ONLY FOR ARCHIVAL purposes and NO ONE is allowed to know the recording exists.......blah blah blah...)

It's nights like tonight that I know why I got into this business. :D

Oh-Tay Buckwheat - here be the details. :D

Main pair of mics -
Schoeps CMC 6 ext / MK2 h 4 feet 7 inches behind the center of the podium, 9 feet 1" above the stage, spaced 12 3/4 inches apart (measured at the capsule) with capsules angled 21 degrees off center and parallel with the stage (no up and down angling).

Outrigger mics -
Microtech Gefell M296 placed 11 feet 4 inches out from the center array and 6 inches further back. Height - 8 feet 9.5 inches above the stage.

Brass mics -
AKG C460 (Audio Upgrades versions)placed on the same stand as the main mics with an adapter, only level with the stage and aiming up at the performers. Mics placed at a strict ORTF setup. (likely to not use these mics in post, but if needed, will bring them in a little)

Spots -
Audix M1290 omnis placed at head level in the orchestra aiming upwards. Left spot placed between flute and clarinet sections just behind the second violins. Right spot placed in front of the contra-bassoon and behind oboe and english horn.

Hall mics -
Neumann M50 suspended from custom adapters at the balcony splitting the hall in thirds.

2 recordings made at the same time - one in 24/44.1 the other in 24/192

Preamps -
True Systems Precision 8 and Grace 101s

All connections made by Monster Cable including custom snake.

Set up time - 3 hours
Sound Check - 2 hours with the Canadian Brass
Concert - 2 hours

Software - Sequoia
Hardware recorder - Alesis HD24
Conversion - RAMSA WZAD-96M (x2)
- Apogee AD16x

I think that's just about got it...
