I am in need of some advice. My brother is just finishing building his home recording studio. He is very talented and for Christmas I would like to get him a magazine subscription to keep him on top of the latest news, sounds, tips, ideas, and encouragement for those in the recording business. Does anyone read any of these five magazines, and if so, which one would you say you can't live with out and why? The five I am looking at are: 1) Electronic Musician 2) Mix Magazine 3) EQ 4) Recording 5) Tape Op

I used to have a subscription to Mix, but I was finding that I was only reading half of the articles. The rest didn't really interest me or pertain to what I was doing. Mix is a great all-round engineering magazine. I personally prefer Sound on Sound, becasue of it's great reviews and interviews. That's all I need.
I found that magazines like EQ and Recording were not professional enough, and alot of their articles get "repeated". Those magazines are great for one-off purchases, but maybe not as much for subscriptions. At least IMO.

Sound on Sound is great (I have the eSubscription) I also really like EQ. they've really turned around as of late.

I've heard good things about Tape Op, but I haven't seen a copy of it yet (I live in the UK). I might just subscribe to it anyway (circa £55) and if turns out to not be my cup of tea, just not renew it.
Of the three that I get, I'd say that SOS is the most newbie friendly.

I've heard many say TapeOp is their favorite magazine. The only downside is that it only comes out bi-monthly.
I get all 5 you listed and more. I browse through them all, I usually read Mix, EQ, & Tape Op in my spare time. If you are going to buy him a subscription, I'd start with MIX (& definitely take advantage of the opportunity to get him Tape Op, it's really a great independent mag).
He'll probably be extremely happy with both of those.
