I'm getting onto finer points of my mixes. If you refer to the "recording massively high gain guitars" post earlier you can see what gear I am using.
I'm trying to get a big explosion sound in a couple of the songs I'm mixing in order to give more dramiatic effect to the different parts of the songs.
I dont know where to start really. It sounds like the sound is created from an lowest bass guitar note (I'm in B) but eq'd so only the sub harmonic frequencis come through. Or, sometimes like a low tuned floor tom.

I used a kick drum sample. Compressed the hell out of it! Then limited it. YES IT WAS ALL WELL OVER THE TOP! THEN....stuck it through a really cheap CamelPhat plug-in and just messed about with its settings (distortion up a tiny bit, no flanger and eq to taste)....then i was really cheeky and sampled a massive explosion from the movie Tremors and stuck that over the top of it!

usually this is a electronic/analog kick or tom sound (something like a roland 808 or 909 kick) with a low pass and compression with a mid to slow attack/fast release setting.
it's not really easy to achieve this boomy and in-your-gut bass sound, because if you make it too loud it will push back the rest of the music, when compressed/limited at mastering, and if you mix it too low you won't get the desired effect.
start with a nice kick sample/sound and experiment with it.
