I was planning to get a usb interface so I could record someone on location with a laptop (I currently own a dual core pentium 2.0, with 2gb ram and a 5400 hard disk, I know it's not nearly what's required for heavy-duty performance, but I was hoping it could at least play back a reference track and record in it with the interface).
I recently caught sight of the m-audio fast track mk ii and I have to say it looks really impressive with the phantom power and the XLR input for it. it really seems to be a good choice also for the future since I had in mind, maybe later on and with a different computer, to play live with and either use a vst or simply play back audio files and fxs through it.
so, the question is... is this a good choice of an interface? could I use it further down the road with a usb keyboard plugged to a usb port in the laptop and the fast track in another one? (is that the way it would work?)
what about performance and recording? would I get good results in the long term with it?

sorry jack, I don't fully understand what you mean by "sound bytes" and "overdubs" when recording. do you mean tracking by "overdubs" and sound bytes just recording something with nothing playing at the back?
and what about playing back sounds and (maybe) in the future some vsts o the like live?

320gb hd 7200rpm
onboard intel graphics card, which I can configure to use up more o less ram according to the aplications
with this brand new thing, I'm going to experiment with sonar 8 PE, maybe later get myself a recording interface (what about this...? [[url=http://[/URL]="http://www.esi-audi…"]ESI - UGM96[/]="http://www.esi-audi…"]ESI - UGM96[/] ) to get sound bytes as you said
and... maybe further down the road try to see how much I can do with vsts... is ableton live the product to use for playing back sounds and hosting vsts?

By location recording if you mean collecting sound bytes, then yes, the Fast Track should work ok. At this price point all of these type of interface sounds pretty much the same. If you mean to do overdubs and such, then the USB interface may or may not be the way to go. It's difficult to know without trying.
