HI THERE.
JUST WANT A LITTLE INFO HERE. I WAS WONDERING IF I CAN USE MY LAPTOP FOR EDITING OR MASTERING OR JUS PLAIN RECORDING? I HAVE A DELL INSPIRON 8000 PIII 850 WITH 512 MB MEMORY 32 GIG HD 32MB ATI VIDEO 20 GIG SECOND HD 8X CD-RW WINXP PRO CORPORATE. IT HAS FIREWIRE AND USB.

Sorry about the caps I'm at work and we use caps in all data entry. thanks for the info from what I understand maybe I should get a firewire harddrive to place my audio data on maybe a 30gig. I will check the sites you suggested.And :) I was thinking of use my laptop on my lunch breaks to write drum tracks with acid 3.0 or fruity loops. The 8000's are fast enough for several tracks of audio - the main limitation will be the internal hard drive speeds. Only just recently have I seen any laptop with faster than 4500 RPM hard drives. However, you should be able to get at least 16 tracks at 16 bit 44k sampling rate, possibly more. If you want higher quality, the track count will go down from whatever you get at 16/44. If I'm not mistaken, the USB on that model is only Version 1.1, so that would be another bottleneck. Best bet would be one of the newer MOTU interfaces that use true firewire. Look into their model 828 and 896. Also, RME makes some quality interfaces that can be ordered with a PCMCIA card for portables.

Depending on how serious you get, there are a few USB peripherals available to enhance mixing and control so you can use real faders/knobs to adjust parameters as you mix, instead of doing everything with on-screen controls and a mouse.
One more small point: TYPING WITH THE CAPS LOCK ON IS CONSIDERED YELLING, and is normally only used sparingly to emphasize a particular word like you would speaking, if it will help clarify your meaning. If it's a matter of bad eyesight, like I have, try typing into Wordpad or Word with a large font (14 point, or larger) then cut and paste into the window. This is usually what I do, and it really helps.
