What are some common Micing techniques to achieve the thick 70s funk drum sound?

The quick n dirty answer is to take the bottom (and front) heads off, and tape the shit outta the top heads, making the batter heads as dead as possible. Sounds awful to me no matter what. But one man's trash...

While your at it, put a 57 (or better yet a Shure Green Bullett) in the bottom of a metal trash can (leave the lid off) and record that in the same room while your recording the rest of the kit, and mix to taste. This is no joke, It can add a different dimension to the sound. It is also NOT a new trick, but one that was born in the Disco era that you are interestred in.
