Hi.

So I own a Mesa / Boogie Dual Rectifier Tremoverb.

Is it possible to replace the 6L6 valves with 6550 ones? Id like to be sure before I do so I dont damage the head.

I like the 6L6 sound but Im trying to get different sounds... Recently I tried a custom valve head using the 6550 and I liked the clean channel a lot. The distortion was also powerful and bold.

Thanks!

hell yes

Thanks for the advice.

I did write mesa/boogie about this but I havent got a response so far.

My local store doesnt have a clue about this, or wont tell me. They are selling the other head with the 6550 so they prefer me to buy the whole thing rather than just the valves.

I found a couple of reviews from people using 6550´s on mesa (http://www.harmony-central.com) , but it wasnt clear if they had to mod the mesa/boogies first, or if they just plugged the valves as I want to do.

Thats why Im posting on forums! someone around has to know

Solutions

Ok so I found some info and Im posting else if anyone has the same problem.

The dual rectifier CAN use KT88 or 6550 tubes in the EL34 bias setting. its also recommended to use them with the Bold/Tube or Sponge/Silicon settings, so the tubes dont get too hot.

KT88 and 6550 use 1.6 ampers, wich is not too far from the EL34´s 1.5 ampers. Enjoy the tone.
