The big problem with most multimedia speakers is that they do *everything* "justice" - No matter how good or how bad it actually may sound, everything pretty much sounds similar and homogenized through multimedia and gaming speaker setups.

I have never found any multimedia speakers that I like. They usually sound too wimpy, lack power and headroom and sound rather colored. And, I am a big fan of JBLs, but not their consumer speakers, they only have the name on the sticker. Perhaps a reasonably priced near Field, pair of selfpowered monitors from your local music store would do better? I think once you get something like that and listen to your favorite highly regarded CDs, you'll come up with a better focus with your listening as to what you want to accomplish?

My monitors are my prized posession. They were cheap 10 years ago, and I have listened to EVERYTHING through them. Gives me a big advantage I think when I am recording / mixing on them.

I think you can get great results using less than state of the art equipment, but a decent set of monitors are the gift that keeps on giving.
