I'm going to listen in on this thread!

I'm leaning towards the Alesis 24trk ADAT instead of the laptop. Haven't decided yet. When I weigh the $$$ - the 24trk wins.

If you're tracking from your computer interface the Lap Top is probably the better way to go.

I own a ECHO Layla DeskTop PCI sys with Cabase 5.0 If I could, I would have bought the 24 trk Hard Drive. ICB Audio in Cincinnati has it for $1,899.

ok how about this... if you only had two channels to record a live show (in a loud club) how would you do it? any preference on mics. i have been running off the board mix but am missing that "live sound". until i decide on what new outboard pre's and interface i would like to get a better feel on these recordings.
Thanks

Well, the real live feel is usually a bit exaggerated in recordings ... nevertheless, I would suggest the following :

Use 2 condenser microphones that have a solid directional characteristic (meaning that they surpress sound that is not coming from the main sound direction) and put them on stands (or position them otherwise) so that they are a fair amount higher than the audience - you will otherwise have too much of people in the audience talking and stuff. Point them towards the left and right side of the PA (you might need to play around with the exact positioning).

With good microphones this usually gets decent results if the house mix is good. I would recommend some quality figure-8 condensers. Which brands and models ? Maybe Rode's or AT's ... Others here might have better advice.

There might also be better ways of doing it but this one has worked for myself and a number of good people I know.
