Hello there.
I'm looking for the simplest thing possible to let me use my Alesis HR-16 (because it's the simplest thing possible and I'm the simplest thing possible), but get better drum sounds. The idea of MIDI'ing it to an Alesis DM5 seems like the obvious answer.
These DM5 suckers seem to travel in ebay for a couple hundred bucks and change. My question: Is this the buy at this price or is there something else that's the buy at this price?
All I want are standard clean rock kits, nothing exaggerated, good tuning capability and very good response time. I know that a $200 box is a $200 box and I could stretch a little but $$$ stuff is meaningless to me because it'll just never happen.

if you just want a variety of standard drum and percussion sound
if you just want a variety of standard drum and percussion sounds on a budget then i second the boss dr770 it's a great little unit.
most other very tweakable drum mashines are mostly electronic sounding, not much of standard rock-sounding, like ea-1, or the classic roland tr808 or tr909, nice mashines but probably not up your street soundwise (and the rolands are damn expensive, if someone gives one away in a good condition!!)
some of the e-mu soundmodules have very good drumsounds too, but they are not dedicated drum-modules...
i know you are looking for hardware, but if you can hook up a comp with midi, battery or ultrabeat (in logic) is the answer, virtuell unlimited drum sounds and beat creations...
