So I have a Yamaha 02R digital desk that is returning to me today; I've been letting my brother use it for his small home studio/rehearsal space for his band - which is a Steely Dan Tribute act - not that it matters...
Anyway, my brother is moving into a smaller apartment, so this beast is coming back to me today; I really don't have much storage space left around here, I was thinking about how I might possibly integrate this desk into my current studio rig. So far, I'm not really comin' up with any ideas, but I'm absolutely willing to entertain any suggestions that any of you might have.
I know the first responses will tell me to sell it, put it on ebay, etc., but this thing is a BEAST. It's heavy (I'm thinking probably because of all the fader motors) and awkward - this isn't a light console that you can pick up and carry around under your arm... or, for that matter, even get more than a few steps carrying it with both arms. and so this thing is NOT gonna go standard UPS; besides, I can't see where I'd get more than a couple hundred for it anyway - unless I'm mistaken.
Any ideas? Please? Pretty Please?

I would, except the shipping would probably be more than what the console would go for.... and, I'd have to be the one to lift it and get it to the freight depot. LOL
I wonder if I could use it as a control surface. It has midi in and out, as well as that little multipin port you find on older digital gear... I used it originally to connect two of them together... I wonder if it would be useful as that... a midi sourced control surface...
I have the O3D here, similar OP system that I bought just for the control surface years back and it sucks. It creates latency. Sell or trade it in on something. There will be someone that see it as a keyboard mixer or, just can't pass it by because they look so sweet..

That kind of motorised fader is not cheap.. check on ebay ;).. of course you need time and energy to remove them from the board..
Another option would be to promote your studio by doing a console give away.. Or keep it to record live.
Craigslist, or on eBay, sell it as local pickup only. This means that the buyer, even if their across the country, can just hire a mover, or shipper to come and get it.
We we got the trident, we hired some company that does shipping routes, and if they don't have a full truck they will do pickups that are on the route. I can get the name of the website or whatever for. Someone at the studio if u need it, to offer to your potential buyers, to help solve the shipping issue.

I would rather do that any day of the week over having someone know where I live as well. I don't know about your neck of the woods but here, those online buy and sell things are full of bad people looking for opportunities. They find out where you live , pay you a visit like potential buyers, then come back and clean you out.
I never use my real address for the listing either. They ask for the zip and i give them one in another neighborhood. When I get an email, I screen them big time, then follow up on a phone call from a cell. Buy and sells are the Crack Heads business of choice

Scary stuff. I live in a strange suburb/inner city, where the nice areas aren't too far away from gangs ect. Most of the time they are more concerned w there own territory.
As far as CL goes, I don't meet or give any specific locations until, I screen the on the phone, and I meet in a public place, usually a shopping plaza, and don't go alone to anyone's house. Onyl twice have I had people come by my place, but not into the house. Nobody I know has had problems.
I'm sure if your cool w a local music shop, they'd let you meet in the store, for a fee, or free, depending on just how cool u were w them. Just a thought. It's especially tough w a mixer cuz I wouldn't buy one from a stranger w out trying it throughroly. Maybe you could just put it on consignment at a local store, my local shop takes 15%, but it's usually worth it, and I try to make up for at least half of there cut by pricing it a bit high.

So I've been considering getting another digital mixer like perhaps the Presonus? But yours, I'd consider. I'll basically just be taking the light pipe from the ALESIS HD-24 XR. And outputting digitally. So the sound really doesn't concern me but the feature set does. Not that I have any real money to spend because I don't. But if ya make me a deal? I might go for it? It is 24-bit, 96 kHz isn't it? Maybe not? Maybe only 48 kHz?

No lightpipe I/O on the Presonus StudioLive series. The Yamaha 02R has ADAT lightpipes but no computer interface. The original 02R was 44.1/48KHz only.
Unless your computer has a digital I/O board with ADAT lightpipe or S/PDIF (2-channel only), neither of those two mixers would give you all-digital HD24->mixer->PC routing.
I find myself doing more mixes using the routing HD24XRs (analog out) -> analog mixer -> FireFace800 -> PC, which I find gives better results than an all-digital path, especially for 96KHz recordings. Ironically, of the collection I have, the analog mixer I like the best for this work is the A+H Zed-R16, which is equipped with ADAT (only 48KHz) and FireWire I/O. The EQ is glorious and surpasses anything digital I have heard.
I have a Firestudio Lightpipe (discontinued) for 32 x 32 channels of Firewire to Lightpipe conversion. I could go to the Alesis that way, but if I'm recording remotely, I go straight from the SL24.4.2 via firewire to the laptop [ 24-bit / 48kHz ] and analog direct outs from the SL24 into the HD24's analog inputs for redundancy. I've always suspected I am better off keeping the clocks independent of one another. I am limited to 48kHz all the way around since my Alesis is not of the XR variety, and that is the highest sample-rate of the SL / Firewire / computer chain. If I had an HD24XR, I could record at 96kHz from the analog SL direct outs, but it's been difficult to talk myself into spending the money for the XR or EC-2 upgrade card given the age of the technology. Boswell has me convinced I'd rather spend more and add an A-H Zed R16, or possible QU-16 to the toolbox.
So far I've never had the PreSonus Capture software glitch once, but if it's important you lug the backup rack anyway.

Bos is right - and wrong - LOL. The 02R could be configured to use a variety of I/O's. Currently, it's equipped with 3 TDIF 8 channel cards, which uses a D-sub cable to get to D-88's, D 78's, D 38's.
But he is correct in that you could also install 3 ADAT cards instead if you wanted to, which does use LightPipe as it's format.
It's either 44 or 48, 20 bit.

FWIW, I have a MOTO 2408 I'll throw in, it has both LP and TDIF connections. ;)
And, while I can't promise this, IF I can locate a few TDIF/DSub cables, I'll throw them in as well... IF I can locate them.
It's gonna need some maintenance, although it does work. Channel 3 needs either a motor repair or a replacement. Someone like yourself should be able to handle the maintenance on this thing with little to no problem.
As far as I know and what I've been told by Jimmy at Yamaha, all parts are still readily available.
Based on what I'm seeing on ebay for very used 02R's, I figure that $400 oughta do it....and again, I'll throw in the MOTU if you think it would be useful.

Even though you and I have had our differences... because I'm a very honest guy; I don't think you should by this.
It's gonna take a lot of work to get it back to its prime, and even when it was in its prime, it still sounded VERY digital. There's no warmth to this console at all. I bought it originally because I needed automation and midi implementation. I never was knocked out by this console in terms of sound. Although, at the time ('97) it seemed like a good idea, and I did like the 32 bit DSP FX processors. Jimmy from Yamaha told me that the reverb was essentially the same chip and architecture of the old Rev 7, which I personally loved...and I have to say that as digital verbs go, the 02R's was really nice.
All that being said, please read SOS's rundown very carefully, and think really hard about this purchase...I'm not sure you're gonna be happy with it at any price.
Well then... I shall defer to your recommendation. And I'll pass on that. So thank you. There'll be something else when the time comes. I might still be interested in your 2408? I already have one. Having a pair might be real handy? What would you want for that? That's light enough to be shipped, inexpensively. And do you have the PCI 324 or 424 card? Mark 1, Mark 2 or Mark 3? I still have a couple of XP desktop's I'm using so, either both in one or one in both? Having one in the RV motorhome and one in the truck, would be great. While I still have my TASCAM DA-88's and my ALESIS HD-24 XR. And they both interface through 2408's. If things get moving along? I'll get a Job Co. Black Box or two. Maybe the TASCAM 48 track? But this would tide me over.
Another thing I might be doing along with tracking to the HD-24 is also simultaneously tracking to a Scully 284-8. Which I'll have in Record/Repo and stream that output directly into the eight channel input on a 2408 to the computer. Half the wow & flutter and no print through. While also generating a for broadcast stereo mix. And since I've been using my other 2408 as my master recorder in the control room, this would be great. So now I'm also thinking about getting a master clock? And then I could run the HD-24 at the proper 44.1 kHz, as well. Some low jitter thingy that doesn't cost a fortune? Maybe even useful if I were to get an Orion? I think that's the 32 channel gizmo?
And I was never really wild about Yamaha reverbs anyhow LOL. I use my SPX-90 for other effects and rarely for reverb. Unless I wanted dark reverb? In that way it is more lush sounding. Sometimes better on strings. But for reverbs I generally stick with my Lexicon's.
I missed out on that Eventide plug-in. I couldn't properly set up my i-Lock account, I guess? And their FAQ stuff was completely unhelpful. Oh well. Not a necessity. I can always purchase, down the road if I find I can't live without it? It certainly isn't overpriced.
The only thing that might sting a little bit in Austin, is that there are 4 other, really nice, old school style studios. One with an API. Two with vintage Neve. And a new studio with an SSL 6000. Most all of which offer 8 hour recording packages for about $250. Which is what I was charging back in 1991 LOL. As my introductory rate. Now it's the going rate. Welcome to the 21st century. Maybe it just means I'll be having more fun, more often? If I don't damage myself at nearly 59 years of age? It's been a good few years since the truck has done any remotes. This might get hairy? No it won't LOL. Because I'm doing it. And I'll have this great 28-year-old with me. As long as I have them up to speed in the control room so when I collapse unconscious and can't be revived? The show can still be recorded. It's that or the 28-year-old won't be able to keep up with me? Especially since I'm starting to feel real spunky!
