I am new here and read a post that indicated that it may be worth waiting 6 months or so to upgrade my audio PC. Could someone lead me to the thread that discusses what is coming up in the near future that is going to make such a big difference in audio PCs? Or if it has not been spelled out, could someone explain what is on the horizon?

I am currently using Vegas 3.0c as my main recording software, along with Sound Forge 5.0, and do not record any midi. I definitely need to upgrade as I am currently using a 3 1/2 year old P II 400 antique.

You really need to decide how long you are willing to put off your puter purchase and decide, REALISTICALLY, how much you are willing to spend on it. Remember ... when new puter stuff comes out, 99% of the time it's buggy and very expensive. So even if the new puter stuff hits the shelves on schedule, it's always wise to give it a little time, let others be the beta testers, and see what they have to say before laying out your hard-earned bucks.
How long are you willing to keep using your PII 400? Is it holding back your creative process and/or your technical learning process?
You have an option here. If you want to wait for this big jump in computing power before you dump a load of cash, perhaps you could buy something more current than what you have to hold you over, but won't put a big dent in your pocket. Right now, you can easily put together an Athlon 1600+ tower for under $500! It's not the latest, greatest thing on the market, but if you have to wait a year or so for Intel's new technology to be ready for primetime, at least you'll have something decent to get you through.

SOS...you've got a great point here...

Even when we get the new Prescott stuff from Intel next year, it will probably be very expensive, plus, as you mention, not 100% ready for prime time (pardon my skeptisicm...).

It will probably be closer to the end of 2003 before the step to the new systems will be a reality, and I doubt that I can wait that long to go to the VST Sytem Link, and my 1GHz system is looking pretty slow in comparison...

I hate to think about building an "interim system" until things even out, but as SOS points out, it might be a smart investment ultimately...
