I recently asked a question about the Buzz MA 2.2 and Millennia HV-3 for recording of acoustic based music (with vocals) on another forum. From my limited experience, which is essentially with Lynn Funston's Pre CD, I found the Buzz to be warmer/less open than the HV-3. I like the clearer more open and transparent sound of the HV-3.
I had pretty much decided on the HV-3, but after reading and talking to several folks, I am interested in seeing how the Pendulum MDP-1 might stack up to the HV-3. I realize the HV-3 is probably cleaner/more accurate and transparent, but the MDP-1 sounds like it can go from clean to more colorful, depending on how hard you drive the input stage. It sounds like the Pendulum may be well suited to acoustic guitar, mandolin and vocals (maybe cleaner/clearer, less wooly than many tube pres).
Opinions on the Pendulum and how it would compare to the HV-3?

That is saying quite a bit, impressive. Do you think the Pendulum is a relatively transparent preamp, assuming you are not driving the front end/tubes to hard? It sounds like the Pendulum is definitely more flexible than the HV-3 as well.

I lent my Pendulum MDP-1A to a studio owner who uses a HV-3 as his mainstay. Using Schoeps CMC6/MK4 and Gefell M294 mics on acoustic guitar, he said, in essence, "The Schoeps and HV-3 sound like really great mics through a really great pre...The Schoeps through the Pendulum sounds like I have my ear in front of the guitar."
