I'm looking to get my DAW project off the ground by purchasing a Mic Preamp box in order to record vocals, drums, and other live instruments. The folks at ADK audio recommended the PreSonus Firepod, but I've heard some reports on harmony central of them being lower quality than some other preamps... I like the idea of 8 mic preamps on one box, but perhaps PreSonus is sacrificing quality for quantity. Does anyone know anything about this?

Hey man, i can help you with this. i recently borrowed a firepod from my local music store, while i was waiting, for my motu 828mkII to come in. Although it was easy to use, and reliable, i didnt really like the sound. I would think that one would really want this unit, if they were not considering a mixign console of anykind, because it has the 8 xlr/hi z inputs right on the front. If this is what you need, then, this is a good unit for you.

In my case, I kept the Motu, cause, i have a big ole Ramsa mixing console, and, all of my inputs go into that, and, then, from there, out of the insert points, and into the motu, all connected at the back of the motu. This, way, i dont have a bunch of wires on the front of my rack. Plus, the motu, also, has the 2 pres hi z / xlr inputs right on the front, for quick connectivity. So you get 10 inputs as opposed to 8. Also, the motu acts as a mixer, and, has a feature called cue mix, which gives you absoulute zero latency, from within the hardware, where as the firepod, does not, and, you will have some latecy with it.

So, really depends on what you need. I say the motu, is way better for the little extra cost. Which, in my case, was only 150.00 or so.
