I'd say both boxes will go from clean to dirty, depending how much toob you dial in.

I haven't used that particular Presonux box, but I can tell you that the ones I have used I found very noisy and rather uninspiring. Not a crap sound, but just nothing to write home about. But the noise issue with every Presonus unit I've tried is just too much to handle.......

On that alone, if I was forced to choose one of those two I would go for the VTB.

I've tried both units and own the tubepre, and IMO the Tubepre is a slightly better pre. Not many people will probably agree with me but I've gotten some really nice vocals with it and is wonderful as a direct in for bass. If you drive the tube to hard it will begin distorting but I've actually found uses for that in some of the heavier bands I record. I also own the digimax and eureka by presonus neither of which I find to be noisy like the previous person mentioned. Anyway IMO you should just save up some money and buy something like the brick by groove tubes you'd be much happier with that.

i've owned both units, and bbbyyyy far the vtb is way better, i sold my tube pre a while ago, it was way noisy and i've got some awesome sounds out of my vtb, and it's very quiet, i've used it for acoustic gtr, screaming vox, bass di, elec gtr, and its sweet, plus i like that its got a built in preamp insert and impedence switch, i've not used the impedence switch but i know i've got it for the future, and the tube saturation is way better to use and mix on the vtb then on the tube pre, on the tube pre you have to balance out the gain and drive knobs to get some tubeyness in it, but on the vtb1 you can use the gain knob to get a good level then just add give what ever amount of saturation that you desire.

I would def recomend the vtb1 over the tube pre, 100%

I recommended the VTB to you ( your other post) because you were complaining about the price of the Grace!!! From what you are claiming that you are using the preamp for, I can't really say that the better Grace will help you. I did not recommend the PreSonus because I have had too many issues with their later models.
As far as using the computer to add "color", the "color" that we are referring to is a slight distortion brought on by a tube in the preamp, not readily available by a computer plug-in.
Say you are doing this for techno-dance stuff, and you want to use a vocoder plug-in. Adding a bit of "tube overdrive" from the preamp will help give the vocoder more harmonics to modulate. This will result in a stronger vocoder effect, a good thing, no?
I stand by my recommendation that FOR YOU (limited budget, techno-dance production, and limited choices in China), that the VTB is the way to go....PEACE!

In fact, get two VTB-1's and the rack mounting kit. Then you have a stereo path and you are still about half the price of the Grace.
