Hi All,

I'm fairly new to the game and was wondering. I will be recording a bassplayer I have recorded. The last time I used the direct out from his amp (some expensive but primarely live piece) and recorded the speaker also. The results were satisfying. But now I have a nice Tube pre from TLaudio with a DI input. Would it be better to input his bass directly into this preamp; I could record the output of the preamp and use the second output to route back to his speaker (so this his speaker amp) and record the speaker also?

So the question is: is it better to use my preamp or his dedicated basspreamp? Of course I'm going to try both to see what sounds best, just curious one what would be the obvious way to go...

Greetings,
Dirk

DirkB, the short answer is use your TLaudio and the bass di and see what works best.

But the real answer is to focus on the BIG picture. Keep in mind there are two issues, the first thing I try to find out what sound the bass player is trying to capture. Not sure if the bass player is your client or he is doing a track for your project, but they may have a sound in their head and that will effect how you approach this problem.

The second and maybe a more important issue is how is the bass going to fit in the with the rest of the mix. Many times I don't know at the beginning of a session what every instrument we will be using at the end of the song. So Its hard to know exactly what bass sound I will go for. In order to give myself the greatest number of options I will often record two tracks. I don't know what kind of sound you're looking or what sound you are getting out of the basspreamp but try both and see which sounds better for the final mix.

My gut tell me the TLaudio will be the cleaner sounding of the two. Of course as we all know clean is not always the desired effect. :)
