Hi guys,
was wondering what techniques are popular when trying to "glue" a main vocal with the rest of the track and achieve overall cohesiveness. I find that a simple reverb,etc, doesnt always work very well as the vocal can pull away from the mix disturbing the "3d" image and overall sense of depth we may have already created with rhythm section. They still managed to keep this image even in genre's (like the 80's) where the fx are very obvious and up front. Yet there still seems to be a "one-ness" and cohesiveness about the whole mix that bloody works!

The glue I think you're referring to is a compressor on the final 2-Bus.
You don't want it pumping, just lightly compressing on the peaks. Try a light ratio with a medium attack and fast release. Set the threashold to where the comp's just feathering on.
That should pull the whole thing together and create that cohesiveness you're looking for. Just watch out that you're not squeezing the life out of the mix.
