Has anyone ever heard of this or tried this...

Use a gate that takes the volume of the snare for gating out all other drums on the room mics tracks... and then using this as an isolation to add in more room snare on top of everything else with out getting too much room sound on everything else (mostly toms / kick)

Are you asking about sidechaining a Gate?

Its not very clear.

Or I'm still asleep.

Either way...it sounds like you want to gate the room mic to the snare strike, and then add the room sound back in to the length of the gates' opening.

You would do this through a gate that can be sidechained. You might like a touch of compression on the sidechained sound in this case.

Sidekick by Twisted Lemon. My results with it are sort of hit-or-miss, but when it works, it works well.

You'll have to set up the effect on both the snare and overheads tracks, setting the overheads as gated ("ducking") and the snare as the key ("keying"). Let's hear some results when you get it kicking, hey?
