OK, I AM OFFICIALLY STUMPED! I HAVE AN ART TUBE PREAMP FOR MY VOCALIST Mic AND NO MATTER WHAT SETTINGS I USE I GET A INTERMITTENT DISTORTION. ALSO I AHVE A CLIENT WHO HAS A PIANO WHICH SEEMS TO DISTORT EVEN AT LOW END RECORDING. I HAVE REPLACED CABLES AND STILL BOTH OF THESE KEEP OCCURRING. I AM RUNNING PROTOOLS 6.4 WITH NO PHANTOM POWER ON FOR PROTOOLS. MY BOARD AND ART SYSTEM CARRYING THAT RESPONSIBILITY. THANKS IN ADVANCE

McCheese make a paramount point here...

Troubleshooting 101:

1. Check your gain stages to insure there is no clipping.

2. Define your possible variables... equipment, cables, all parts of your signal chain..

3. Work your way through the signal chain removing/testing 1 piece at a time including the soundcard, protools and board.

4. When the problem goes away or appears you have found it.

You can work in either direction.... Remove everything, adding one piece to the chain at a time or start with everything and work your way back removing one at a time. Either way will work. Process of elimination is a very powerful tool.

Also, you said intermittent... intermittent as in at any volume or time without reason? Or even at low volumes does it happen during "peaks" etc? Which is delivering the phantom power? The board or the pre. It should be from the pre since it is what the mic plugs into. Turn it off on the board if it is on.

Best regards-
