OK first of all my set up is a Tascam us-122 and my onboard sound card realtek 97 using the asio4all driver. ok so I start recording or playback and after a few minutes (it varies) I start to get digital distortion, at which point I go to preferences change the driver to someting other then asio4all then back to asio4all (if that makes sense) and the distortion goes away for a few minutes. also i've just noticed it doesn't effect the recording... just the playback
how can i fix this

I get this crackling, just using my headphones or speakers (from the realtek) and no it distorts immediatly

When you go into Cubase LE(I'm assuming here because that's what should have come with your Tascam), go to your device settings and choose TASCAM ASIO for your driver. NOT ASIO full duplex and NOT ASIO Mulitimedia. TASCAM ASIO(or US122 ASIO or whatever it appears as in Cubase). You should be able to reduce your latency to at least 10ms unless your computer is particularly slow.
ASIO4ALL is a hack at best. The realtek card should be out of the picture completely.
The "digital distortion" you are hearing is drop outs due to ASIO4ALL's inability to maintain sync between the Tascam and the Realtek.

Yes indeed, the problem is the latency with the tascam. Solve that and get rid of the realtek and you will be happy for a long time. Search this forum for "latency", and even google it, you'll get about one bazillion answers about how to reduce it. For starters, make sure your hardware is compatible (tascam should provide a list of supported hardware for that particular interface on their website, I would hope). Good luck!
