ive been recording for years now, and just recently started recording on a seperate laptop, for on the go kind of recording. I have a Sony Vaio VGN-NR485E, which has a built in Realtek High Definition Audio Sound Card in. I record with Adobe Audition 3.0 which needs an ASIO sound card to record, since the Realtek card does not offer this, I downloaded ASIO4ALL and have been using it. The problem is, it crashes on occasion. If Audition thinks I have another program open using my sound card such as Reason or Fruity Loops, Audition will lock up and close.
I would be interested in upgrading my sound card to resolve this issue, however I dont know exactly what has ASIO capabilities and what does not. Also, this being my first lap top, I'm not sure on how to do this, would a new sound card be an external device or internal?
Anyway, if you have any suggestions on sound cards please throw them my way. Thanks.

Lexicon makes a nice little unit that is USB. A decent microphone input and you get a decent reverb program. It's ASIO, with some decent bundled Cuebase LE software. $160? Comes to mind? But then you'd also take advantage of some of those new microphone to USB adapters.

You said in your first post that you wanted to "upgrade". Any Soundblaster product is not much of an upgrade for recording, despite the hype. If you only play games or watch movies...then fine...but for real audio recording quality...get something from a music store.
If you are determined to buy the Soundblaster for recording, immediately start saving up more money for something decent when you find out that you want a real recording interface. Then sell that Soundblaster on Craigslist for $5, to recoup some of your money. :wink:
