Hi
I'm trying to find a vocal mic for my own voice that has a bit of bite without sounding too cheap. My voice is smoothish (hear it at http://www.mooremusic.comau if you want)
Im currently using either
1 a RODE K2 which I find gives a 'too smooth' 'closed in' type of sound with no openness
2 a very old RODE Nt (b4 they even had a NT1) which gives a lot more lift in the highs but sounds too thin
3 an sm57 or a sen 421 which gives some clarity but loses sheen
The mics are going into my old Tascam M3500 desk or into a little ART tube MP pre which does give some colour at least.
There are budgetry contraints of course.
Any help would be appreciated.

I listened to your songs "Hey Joan" and "One Day"; they sound great! Well, I listened on my laptop spks but could still hear they are good songs and well recorded.
I take it that I was listening to the Rode into the Tascam?
The vocal sounds good... are there stacking tracks on the verse vocal?

I'm not familiar with the old NT, but the other three mics are certainly good, even if in the end they are not the best match for your voice - your descriptions of them are accurate. I have not played with the TASCAM board, but there is no way you are getting the most out of your mics with the ART. Seems to me that a better pre would help you get more out of the mics you already own and make it easier to evaluate another mic down the line. After all, you are looking for "bite" and transient response is one of the weaknesses of cheap pres.
