Trying Mics out

I wanted to try some mics in my studio before choosing one and I went to Guitar Center and they told me they have a policy of not accepting returns on mics because of health laws. Is that for real? Are there such laws? Also, anyone know other outfits that let you actually try out several mics before buying them?

mic recomendation

hi all,i,m recording ac.guitar ...chain is km84:Sebatron :Hedd 192:pro tools.some of the picky lead lines sound great but the strumming is a little too thick .Any ideas on a good good clean mic to complement the warmth of the seb and bring a little more transparency to the rhthym parts?if i can i want to use the Sebatron as a backdrop to everything.cheers julian

Recording Bass - Micing or Direct Input

I read somewhere that recording directly into the mixer is better and more useful than Micing instruments. So, with that in mind, I tried a direct recording of a bass line onto my DAW which is Sonar 2.2 and I wasn't very impressed with the amount of detail it picked up. For instance, all the little clicks and pops from the strings hitting the frets and pickups.
