what next

ok, so i just landed the foot in the door job i've been dying for--client services at Sony NYC. i want to be an assistant engineer. what next? what skills to you need to be up the level of assistant in a big league studio? help, please, cause i have no idea.

and as an aside, i feel really guilty admitting that the system of a down tune "chop suey" is really pretty neat.

Limiter Question

I am a drummer and monitor my drums through headphones. I use a Crown D-75 amplifier, which is a very high quality amp with headphone output. My problem is, even though the amp is very high quality, I keep frying the headphones. The reason is because after I get all gain structure settings set, every once in a while one of the knobs gets turned inadvertently, and the headphones are history.

Alright, so I got schooled...

Hey guys,
There's this band where I used to live and I recorded a little 3 song demo for them for very little money; my motivation was to learn. Anyway, they seemed pretty stoked with the recording, then a couple weeks later they got another demo recorded at a pro studio (read pro tools and neve). Anyway, in my opinion, if recording was a competition, I got my ass kicked.

Cakewalk, Pro Tools, Cool edit...which to use?

If I want to simply record the audio (sequenced) from my Kurzweil workstation onto my Turtle Beach soundcard, and then add a vocal track, which program(s) would serve me best? I have Cakewalk pro 8, Cool edit pro 1.0, and the Pro-tools free download program. I am using a Joemeek VC3Q pre-amp and a V67 LD condenser for the vocal tracks.

TC Electronic M-One vs M2000

Can anyone who has access or experience with these boxes please compare/contrast. I realize these are two completely differents beasts. But, here are the items I am interested in:

M2000 - hi quality but several years old, 20 bit S/PDIF, available second hand for around $600.

M-One - current but midline product (low-end for TC), 24 bit S/PDIF, available new for about $375.
