What mic preamp / comp is as good or better, IYO, than the Avalon 737. Try to stay around the same price or lower.

I just picked up a used VT-737sp (for a song).

I have been testing it for only two days, but honestly, I am having a hard time seeing a marked increase in quality over my usual "channel strip" of the Speck MicPre 5.0>Speck ASC EQ>RNC.

anyone used this combination?
how does it sound?
any sample audio online?

I cant believe this! I buy this 737 (which is a killer unit, trying to buy another..) from Nashville USED, pop it in my rack and start
fudging around with a signal and all of a sudden...sctratch...crack..pop..fluffzzzzz (no, I did not eat beans)dreaded scratchy pot syndrome. I could not really complain because I got it at a great price, so I contact Avalon

Looking for a very detailed mic preamp to go with the more colored units I have, Neve, 737, 610 on order. Anyone compared or have experience with the M5, 2022, Grace, or Earthworks pre's.

Has anyone heard these against one another?
What are the sonic differences for pop vocal application ie.Celine Dion, Whitney, open singing?

I'm currently in the market for a 2 ch. mic preamp. I'm interested in the CRane Song Flamingo and the Avalon AD2022. I'm also looking to get a few channels of compression as well, so I thought I'd throw in the Drawmer 1969 as an option and potentially kill two birds with one stone.

Opinions on comparing these 2 EQ's? (without considering Avalon's other features and bang-for-the-buck value).
