For playing live is it a good idea add a compressor to the main inserts to give an overall tighter or stronger(punchy) sound?

just a curious question of how you all give treatment to your background vocals in todays modern songs.

How much compression is happening with pop music?

I hear so many different guys replies regarding the amount they put on to "use little as possible" to "lay it on".

I've read that it's put on heavy 3 times throughout the mix. Can someone here shed some light on the subject.
